Soil FAQ

  • Q: What soil do you recommend starting seeds in? A: We recommend starting seeds in a seed-starting soil mix or Pro-Mix with Mycorrhizae. (We use the Pro-Mix with Mycorrhizae when planting our vegetable plants) 

  • Q: What is the best mix to improve the soil in my flower beds? A: We recommend topdressing existing flower beds with Soil Prep. If creating a new bed, mix existing soil with Soil Prep or Topsoil Plus. 

  • ​Q: What is the best soil additive for my vegetable gardens? A: We recommend adding Fertimulch, Steer Manure, Premium Organic Compost, or Soil Prep. 

  • Q: What soil should I use in my outdoor pots or in my raised beds? A: We recommend Miller's Mix for Box Gardens.

  • Q: What should I do if I have hard, clay soil? A: If you have hard clay soil, we recommend adding Soil Prep or Fertimulch. We also carry a product called Clay Buster that is specifically designed to help break up hard, clay soils. 

  • Q: What should I do if have sandy soil? A: If you have loose, sandy soil, we recommend adding Soil Prep, Peat Moss, or Premium Organic Compost.

  • Q: What should I use to topdress my lawn? A: We recommend topdressing lawns with a thin layer of Soil Prep, Premium Organic Compost, or Topsoil Plus. 

  • Q: What do you recommend as a soil additive when planting trees and shrubs? A: When first planting trees and shrubs, we recommend a 50% mixed blend of your native soil with either Tree and Shrub Planting Mix or Soil Prep.
