Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), also known as Devil's Ivy, is one of our favorite houseplants! If you’re looking for a houseplant that is easygoing, attractive, and very forgiving, Pothos is hard to beat.

⚫Bulletpoint summary:

  • Easygoing vine houseplant with heart shaped leaves

  • Tolerates a variety of watering habits

  • Easy to propagate

  • Tolerates low light in homes and is great for offices or college dorms.

What does it look like?

Pothos is a trailing vine with heart-shaped leaves that can vary quite a bit depending on the variety. Some are solid green, while others have splashes, streaks, or patches of yellow, cream, or white. Popular types that we keep in stock include Jade, Neon, Hawaiian, Baltic blue, N’joy & Golden. Each one comes with its own coloring, leaf size, and personailty.

As it grows, Pothos naturally produces long trailing vines. You can let them hang from a shelf or hanging basket(our personal favorite), trail across furniture, or give them something to climb. If you want a fuller, bushier plant, simply trim the vines back from time to time.

In its natural tropical environment, Pothos can grow much larger than the houseplants we usually see indoors. Indoors, it generally stays much more manageable, but the vines can still grow several feet long if they are happy.

How to Care for Pothos -

One of the best things about Pothos is how flexible it is with its light and care requirements. It does best in bright, indirect light, especially if you want to keep strong variegation, but it can also tolerate medium or lower-light areas. In lower light, growth may slow down, leaf node distance will increase, and colorful varieties may become darker and greener, but the plant will usually keep going strong! Pothos should not be planted outside in the bright summer sunlight.

Pothos also isn’t especially demanding when it comes to water. A good rule is to let the top 1-2" of the soil dry out before watering again. If the leaves begin to droop a little, the plant is often telling you it is thirsty. Unlike some houseplants, pothos can tolerate a variety of watering habits from a small watering a few times a week to a deep watering every week. (That means that if you forget to water it one week, or your neighbor that is house-sitting for you over waters it, your Pothos will be just fine 😊)

Now that we've discussed giving your plant a drink, don't forget to feed it as well! We suggest a low concentrate houseplant food or an all purpose soluble fertilizer. Follow the directions on the package, and add to every other watering.

Propagation -

Pothos is so easy to propgate, and many varieties are patent free! To propagate, simply cut a 6-10" section of your vine. Trim any excess vine off just under a leaf node, and remove the leaves on the bottom half of the cutting. Place the cutting(s) in a glass jar with water, or directly into moist soil. (we've had luck with both methods). Give it 3-6 weeks to establish new roots, and transplant as needed.

Additional Information -

Pothos prefers normal indoor temperatures (65°F - 90°F) and does well in average household humidity, although it appreciates a little extra humidity when available. It isn’t a fussy plant, and has become such a popular choice for homes, offices, dorm rooms, and other indoor spaces.

One thing to keep in mind is that Pothos should not be eaten. Like many common houseplants, it contains compounds that can irritate the mouth and digestive system, so it’s best to keep it away from pets or young children who may chew on the leaves.

Its easy to see why Pothos has become on of our favorites here at the Garden Center. Pothos is a top choice for anyone who wants a plant that looks stunning, without the constant attention. Simply put, "Pothos is practical, not picky." It grows quickly, tolerates low light and sporatic watering, comes in several attractive varieties, and is easy to shape, trim, and propagate. If you are thinking of giving up on growing houseplants, give pothos a try!
