Primocane raspberry producing large sweet red berries in September. Very productive. GENERAL RASPBERRY INFO - Many different varieties of raspberries grow well here in the Uintah basin. There are two main types of raspberries: floricane and primocane. Floricane raspberries produce one heavy crop on canes that grew the previous year. Primocane raspberries usually produce a small crop in midsummer on old canes and a larger crop in the fall on newer canes. Raspberries can grow in sandy or clay soils. Raspberries do not like wet soggy soils. If your soil is usually wet and soggy, grow your raspberries in a raised bed. Raspberries do not need support but support can be given to produce taller straighter plants. Adding organic material like soil prep or organic compost will promote drainage and growth. Water new plants two-three times a week to establish. Once established water one-two times a week as needed. Plant canes 2-3 feet apart from each other. Plants usually grow 3-5' high. Pruning: Floricane: Prune dead raspberry canes any time of the year. Prune older canes (canes that did not grow this year) to the ground every fall. Thinning raspberry patches leaving only the strongest new canes (suckers that grew this year) each fall promotes more berries and stronger sucker growth the following year. Everbearing/Fallbearing: For a small summer and good fall crop follow the pruning directions for floricane raspberries. For one large fall crop simply prune all canes to the ground in the fall after the canes have lost their leaves.
