Chiltepin produces very small round red peppers, usually only about 1/4–1/2 inch across. The flavor is bright and smoky with intense heat that comes on quickly, often around 50,000–100,000 Scoville heat units. It is a wild pepper native to the southwestern United States and Mexico and is sometimes called the mother of cultivated peppers.
