The American Hazelnut is a native North American shrub that produces a small 1/2 inch edible nut. The bush itself is also attractive. It ususally grows by multi-stems and suckers.
The bush grows to a max of 6-8 feet high and 6-8 feet wide. It has multi-season value with its spring catkins, summer green color, and fall yellow-red color. Expect blooms around March-April before the leaves emerge. Hazelnuts are hardy in zones 4-8.
A single hazelnut is self-fertile, (pollinates by the wind) but is known for not being as reliable in producing nuts. If you are planting for a nut crop, it is suggested to plant two or more genetically different hazelnuts. (hazelnets planted from seed, or native varieties)
